Michael's Musical Tours

Music, Music, Music:
Music inspired by Frank DeVol

Music, Music, Music

We are very pleased to present Frank DeVol’s choices of new music for The Stars Still Shine web pages.

Frank DeVol died in 1999 at age 88. He was a hardworking and versatile composer whose work graced more than fifty motion pictures. DeVol was probably most familiar to television viewers for his memorable title themes, including My Three Sons, Family Affair and The Brady Bunch.

Born in Moundsville, West Virginia and raised in Canton, Ohio, DeVol started in show business playing violin at the age of 14 in his father’s orchestra for silent films and vaudeville acts. He moved to California in the ‘30s and became an arranger and musical director for a number of radio stars. He arranged music and conducted orchestras that played with vocalists like Doris Day, Rosemary Clooney, Tony Bennett, Vic Damone and Ella Fitzgerald in the ‘40s and ‘50s. He was the arranger and conductor for Nat King Cole’s classic hit “Nature Boy.” (Our thanks to Jeff Bond who wrote Franks obituary in FILM SCORE - The Online Magazine of Motion Picture and Television Music Appreciation.)

Now a few words from Frank:

"Hi everybody! It’s Frank here. I thought it would be a good idea to feature some good music on The Stars Still Shine Web site and thankfully, Bob Murray agreed. Some of us have been anxious to get our music and the music we like back to the people. We didn’t like being cut off from our friends and our sources of inspiration. The writers on this side have the e-magazine and we wanted to have an outlet as well. That’s how Music, Music, Music came about. I can’t promise anything regular so please don’t expect something daily, weekly or maybe not monthly but we will try our best to provide you with good music. Mr. Welk asks that we consider accordion music! With a one, an a two, an a one, two three.

Featured this time:
Swing, Sinatra style

I'm not a musicologist and I don't want to be but I thought you'd be interested in some of the music presented here. I love music, some types I love more than others. The Swing era was one of my favorite times. I just loved the big band sound and I'm very happy that Swing has been brought back and is doing well.

We call the instrumentals presented here as Swing Sinatra Style. Old Blue Eyes had nothing to do with these songs but I'm sure he would approve. The pieces are new but done in the Swing style of the forties and fifties. I have chosen my favorites because I feel that they represent some of the best of the easy listening with a beat. I've used piano and vibes because of the definition of the notes although some would be good with woodwinds or brass. We are very interested in your comments about Music, Music, Music so let's hear from you!

Yours musically,
Frank DeVol"
